The following Religion courses are part of DePaul Cristo Rey's required curriculum:

Religion I Jesus Christ in Scripture and Who is Jesus Christ – 1 Credit

Jesus Christ in Scripture (Semester I)

In this course, students are guided to develop a general understanding of Sacred Scriptures. Through their study of the Bible they come to encounter the living Word of God, Jesus Christ. In the course they learn about the Bible, authored by God through Inspiration, and its value to people throughout the world. If they have not been taught this earlier, they learn how to read the Bible and will become familiar with the major sections of the Bible and the books included in each section. The students pay particular attention to the Gospels, where they may grow to know and love Jesus Christ more personally.

Who is Jesus Christ (Semester II)

In this course, students learn of the mystery of Jesus Christ, the living Word of God, the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity. They are introduced to the belief that Jesus Christ is the ultimate Revelation to us from God. In learning about who he is, the students also learn whom he calls them to be.

Religion II Mission in Christ and Mission of the Church – 1 Credit

Mission in Christ (Semester I)

In this course, students are guided to develop a general understanding of the activity of God through his Son, Jesus Christ. Through this course of study, students learn that for all eternity, God has planned for us to share eternal happiness with him, which is accomplished through the redemption Christ won for us. Students learn that they share in this redemption only in and through Jesus Christ. They are also introduced to what it means to be a disciple of Christ and what life as a disciple entails.

Mission of the Church (Semester II)

In this course, students are guided to develop an understanding of the Living Christ, as encountered in and through the Church. They study the founding of the Church by Christ through the Apostles and how Christians believe the Church is today sustained by him through the Holy Spirit. The students thus study the Church as the living Body of Christ today; a Body that has both divine and human elements. In this course, students learn not so much about events in the life of the Church but about the sacred nature of the Church.

Religion III Sacraments and Life in Jesus Christ – 1 Credit

Sacraments (Semester I)

In this course, students develop an understanding of how Christ is encountered today in a full and real way in and through the sacraments, especially the Eucharist. Students examine each of the sacraments in detail so as to learn how they may encounter Christ throughout life. 

Life in Jesus Christ (Semester II)

In this course, students are guided to develop an understanding of the living Christ. They study the belief that through Christ they can fully live out God’s plan for their lives. Students learn moral concepts and precepts that govern the lives of Christ’s disciples.

Religion IV World Religions and Social Justice – 1 Credit

World Religions (Semester I)

In this course, students will understand the vital role that the major religions of the world play in the global community and develop an awareness of the spiritual truths which can be found in them. Students will also recognize the ways in which other systems of belief and practice differ from Catholicism and appreciate the distinctive characteristics of Catholicism. They will value interreligious dialogue while also acknowledging the Church’s responsibility to proclaim the universal offer of salvation in Jesus Christ as expressed in Nostra Aetate, while understanding the major differences among the three branches of Christianity.

Social Justice (Semester II)

In this course, students will know that Catholic Social Teaching flows from Christ’s concern for others, especially the poor and vulnerable, and is a central and essential element of Catholic life and become familiar with its rich heritage in the Church. They will recognize the kinds of injustice in the world and begin to develop the skills of social analysis to evaluate injustice guided by the themes of Catholic Social Teaching. Additionally, they will appreciate the power of the Gospel message to transform society and be empowered to engage in activities that promote justice.
